Labor Day

Why do we celebrate Labor Day? People look forward to Labor Day each year because it is a long weekend. However, there is a lot more to Labor day then a 3 day weekend with fun parties and barbecues. It is a day to represent and show respect to the American Labor Movement. There is a lot to know about Labor day.

What exactly is the American Labor Movement? This was a time in the 1930s when Americans were fed up with being overworked, underpaid, and with little time off. There was little to no safety in high risk jobs. The American people wanted to have protections so they fought for their rights. During this time there were labor laws passed. Many unions were organized that protected their workers. People gained workplace rights. They started getting wages that were more fair. The working hours became more reasonable, they instituted the weekend. Working conditions also improved. Basically this was the time that we gained all the rights that we know and love as working Americans today.

Many people lost their lives fighting for these rights so know we celebrate their bravery and dedication to the American working people. This is why we celebrate and honor those people every Labor day. So when you are enjoying your extra day off take a moment of silence to really appreciate what they did for us all.

There are some great ways to Celebrate Labor Day in our area on September 2.
